ə i am retired, so "not applicable". i wouldn't most likely anyway because the buses do not allow bare feet. a friend of mine rode the bus for a while, and it actually cost him _more_ than taking his car! so he quit and went back to using his vehicle. truly unfortunate. imo, this is one area where our government really let us down. why should we pay thru the nose for a public transportation system that is putrid in many locations?? i have to take another friend to work every morning between 0400 and 0600 because there is no bus at that time or in the area he lives! ə

It would take much higher gas prices to offset the high metro fares and parking fees at stations.

I'm still using public transportation to commute to work, but I drive about a mile to the park and ride lot. I have been taking the bus to work for over 20 years.

Hey "odysseus94" you are rediculous. I moved twice for new jobs. My job(s) were between 7 and 10 miles from my home. Both times, due to "outsourcing" the jobs were gone within 3 years. I was then forced to find new jobs 25-35 miles from home. That is all that is/was available. What are we supposed to do, pick up and sell out homes, probably at a net loss everytime the job situation changes? That's rediculous.
BTW I would use mass transit if it were possible. But try to get from Point A to Point B in this state using what is (not) available. And yet thet keep adding on extra taxes to help the transit situation in places like Greenwich where everyone has tons of money. But I see NOTHING being done in Hartford and its suburbs.

Unfortunatlty, the costt of parking at the METRO system plus round-trip fare still is higher than the costs of gas to make the same trip for me.

Yep, I have resorted to an alternative. I did that almost a year ago. I now try to confine most of my traveling to a 49cc scooter & only $3.00 to fill up under today's [7/19/06] $3+ per gallon prices in St. Louis.
As for those that live umteen miles from their jobs, sorry folks but I have no sympathy for you. We've known since the 1970s gasoline was going to be going up, up and up. You should have thought about that before you signed on the dotted line for the overpriced surburbia lifestyle and that huge SUV.

Yes, Metro Park-N-Ride. $3.00 each way = $6.00/day. Using an 1/8th of a tank versus 1/4th each day. Cheaper.

Yes, I've started to use other ways to travel as gas prices go higher. I'm not fond of riding in public transportation--sometimes school kids can be rowdy. Instead, I've decided to move within walking distance of my job. That way, I can cut costs long term.
