Gas prices do spike up during the holidays, perhaps with the suppliers influence on retailers.

I thinks Holiday time is Travel time and this is good for the oil biz. Prices do rise during this time.

No.I really think that supply & demand sort of justifies the rate increase coupled with investors demand also. The weather in certain parts of the country plays a crucial role in commodity prices on fuel/ oil consumptions.

I think prices are mostly dictated by supply and demand. There is some who take advantage and manipulate somewhat and more so around the holidays.

SO HOW MANY PEOPLE OVER 6 DO YOU THINK WOULD DO IT? NONE! THEY RATHER GO AND THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT IT THE NEXT DAY.

The reason prices can get manipulated (fluctuate) is that most people find it too painful not to buy when the prices are high, they complain but most still buy. So prices will fluctuate a lot to change consumption by relative small amounts.
In recent years, sometimes prices rose after the holiday weekends, when it was discovered that more had been consumed than anticipated.

Supply and demand do play a part in increasing prices however from what is in the news media it doesn't seem like supply is down just because of an increase in holiday driving. Seems to me like it is a case of a few extra cents per gallon profit. Profit is not a bad thing since it is what it takes for any business to keep going even the big oil companies. So if there is some feeling the price is being manipulated alternative planning could get you around that feeling

Well, here it is the holiday itself, and at least in one instance my theory is shot full of holes. My theory was that in anticipation of the holiday, the retailer would have to raise prices because of labor shortfall, and additional expenses. At one local station, though, it didn't happen; his price has remained constant at $2.77 for a gallon of regular for weeks. Maybe the explanation is that he's making an inflated profit every day.

I am stunned by the number of gas buddy members who are paranoid about the oil companies.
This is the labor day weekend, right? Gas prices are down everywhere. I guess the "manipulators" are pretty incompetent.

Let's look at the Twin Cities average:
Aug 6: $2.588/gal. Sep. 6: $2.417/gal.
Looks like a 17.1¢/gal. drop over the past month.
Did I go back too far? OK.
Last Sunday: $2.460/gal.
That's still a 4.3¢/gal. drop.

The price drop here seemed to start on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, and prices fell all the way until my last check Saturday evening.
It's only been a penny or two here and there but it's a far cry from the (expected) holiday jump.

Yes prices are being manipulated upward and downward.
This is the second long weekend that have shown an actual price drop.
BUT this long weekend is slightly different. The last one had the price drop from Friday to Monday. This one started from Saturday to Monday.
Also I think this is also the first time that it actually dropped in price when comparing Monday and Friday numbers.
At least I can squeeze in a day trip before school starts :)

Looks like the oil industry is attempting to save face. Sure, prices are down a few cents, but the prices have and will continue to be manipulative until strong regulations are enacted to curb the oil industry's rabid greed.
